Thanks Adam. It must have taken you a long time to gather all that fascinating information for this video. The cycles of ecology during interglacial periods of the Pleistocene go through Dry Open Woodland, Deciduous Forest, Mixed Forest and then Humid Conifer Forest before Open Vegetation during a glacial maximum. I pulled this from "The British Palaeolithic" an interesting book by Paul Pettitt and Mark White. A great source of information for anyone interested in archaeology of that period.
Right on Adam!
I found these today 6.26.24 in East Texas
There has always been changes in climate.
Isn’t hemlock just ugly pine?
The spring spray season is a problem for White Oaks in NE Iowa.
Would regular controlled forest fires help with some of these issues?
Just being constructive but, your green screen focus is distracting from your content. You might want to adjust your video style.
Could it be something like garlic mustard which takes over and prevents other plants from sprouting up, then 15 years or so they lose that ability. Except that trees live for much longer.
that big tooth aspen shit is so true
I’m suspicious oak groves may be part a pattern. Oak trees can grow for centuries, maybe a 100 year old oak doesn’t want another oak pressing up against it for another hundred years. How old are these studies... I doubt the study is a hundred years old. This is a common failing in science, motivated scientist intent on making a living can’t prevent their bias from skewing results.
I planted a witch Hazel tree in Pittsburgh and it's doing well, can you tell us in a video about this tree?
You always thank us for watching, but thank YOU for posting.
Picking some tomorrow morning. Done scoped m out. Buyah
This ENTIRE world is in trouble. Time is running out on God's calendar. Jesus is coming for his church and the antichrist will follow that huge event. World peace will break out until he dances in the Holy of Holies in the new Jerusalem Temple. Then all hell will break loose. Choose LIFE. Choose Jesus. NOW.
I go for awareness, vaxx, clothing and inspection.
Very well said. Great conclusion
And now Beech leaf disease (nematodes) as well. The understory of the woods here in western Mass are in terrible shape. No beechnuts will be devastating to wildlife.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion. I find many beautiful Eastern Hemlock in Ontario, around Owen Sound. Knowing more about their history and status is great. Around Ontario common buckthorn is our worst invasive tree, I think.
Fabulous research and presentation, Adam. I wasn't aware of this long-term history of the Eastern Hemlock. In the 22 years I've been living on this land (and esp the last 10 years), we've seen serious hemlock decline - as in widespread death from hemlock pathogens (Wooly Adelgid followed by Hemlock Borer beetle). It's been fascinating to seen how bird species like our woodpeckers benefit from hemlock decline ( a) by feasting on all the invertebrates living in these declining trees and b) by utilizing the cavities created by larger woodpeckers). Forests communities are dynamic - not static...which you communicate well. Change is the one constant we can count on in the more-than-human-world.
As a rule, I always try to listen and think before labeling another's opinions silly or pointless. The fact is, invasive species pose real challenges in many places and for many ecosystems. The thoughts expressed in this video are informed, well considered and seem to me a fine example of working through this issue with respect and understanding. Well done.
sounds to me like the Galixians/Celts (pre vikings) came here and upgraded their wooden vessels, leaving their used wood boat to rot up and down the east coast during these times.(some brought up to settlements for shelters). introducing European and Asian insects/pest. FYI their dna can be found with indigenous populations to the Americas original peoples.
Beautiful video. It makes me sad that people won't let the old growth come back :( On a technical note, the past few videos look like you're on a green screen but suddenly you touch something in the background and it just feels weird. Did you get a new camera or editing software..?
A really useful video. I've found a lot of new, good areas where I can be rather sure to find edible mushrooms just by researching new hikes and trails to walk with my dogs. And going off the trail looking in likely areas while we're out there.
We can’t have fires…that would threaten urban sprawl.
Thank you so much for this healing perspective of the Eastern Hemlock decline. I have even so sad every time I pass one of infested Hemlocks during my hikes. This has given me a context that is broader in time enabling me to believe that perhaps they will come back some day.
Oh boy, climate change!! Those dirty Republicans were at it way back then !!! Gorebull warming too!! 🤣
The problem I see, is poor forest management. Have to cull the mature trees so new trees can sprout .
We have some massive Hemlocks in Ontario, and yes they are dying...only plus I guess is that one by one they flush huge amounts of Reishi, so in the area I'll have the supply the rest of my life. 🍄🍄🍄
solutions would be appreciate and we are suppose to heal the land...if we can go to the moon and create ai and we can't save a species...something is wrong and I don't except wrong think from others...you are just one man limited by your wants and beliefs...maybe start looking for solutions and stop guessing and grifting !
Thank you. You've given me new ways to think about change!
The pollen study is fascinating, Adam! Never heard of that. You always deliver some interesting research data with your lessons. I appreciate you!
Gee whiz! Those ancient inhabitants mush have been using fossile fuels to cause such global warming. LOL Climate cycles are normal and ongoing. It is sad that the decline of chestnut and ash and elm are due to our human medeling of transporting the pathogens from isolated areas, but that may part of the great scheme of things too.
I was told when I was taking a course from a state of Rhode Island expert 25 years ago that i f I wanted to save a residential tree or hedge from Wooly Adelgid, I should mix up a slurry of water , low nitrogen fertilizer, and Merit{ used for grubs in lawns} then, make a dam around tree and pour it in.....the tree goes after the nitrogen, sucks it up to the needles and then the Merit kills the pests. Never had reason to try it but he was a professor teaching a course on pesticides so I assume there must be something in the scholastic literature to back it up
Ty, Adam!
You mean climate can change without human influences?! Has anyone told the humans… 😱🤯
Phenomenal plant food too right? Brewed in a tea. I gotta find me some nettle...
Now I know what my Canadian hemlock is suffering from-thank you. I live in northern Maryland. It looks like a Charlie Brown xmas tree. :(
here in Vermont and New Hampshire the old pine trees are dying, along with some of the old firs
I just want to say thank you for your hard work and dedication producing these videos. I really appreciate it and learn a lot from your work.
Thank you.... a very great story that evokes both happy and sad feelings at the same time.....
Could you imagine what this world would look like if man never inhabited it.
I make hemlock soda all the time. It’s massively abundant here in Massachusetts.
Thanks Adam.
I wonder who caused the climate change 5000 years ago?
this is sad, we are losing many trees besides the majestic hemlock
Yep just get to the damn point radical left wing environmentalists / terrorist are the damn problem and the only fire they promote are at there peacefull protest in democrat run city’s.
Why did they name a conifer after a poison umbelifera?
An informal survey of my 1.6 acres in NC shows almost no small red oaks beyond seedling stage. The white oaks are doing a little better, but not a lot. The real winner seems to be the sweetgums followed closely by tulips.
